Join artist Stella Maria Baer for a one day workshop on how to make watercolors from sands and dirt. Our friends Sara and Rich Combs (@thejoshuatreehouse) will bring sands from their land in Joshua Tree for us to make into paint. We'll sift and grind the natural material into refined pigments, then learn how to mix the pigment into binders to make watercolors. We'll end the day painting with the watercolors we've made from the Mojave Desert. No previous experience required, all skill levels welcome. Lunch will be provided. Materials wise, we understand some of you may already have many or all of the necessary tools, while others would rather us supply all the materials. To that end we are including a list of materials; you may choose to bring your own or if you'd like us to get them all for you and have them waiting at The Assembly please choose the "ticket + materials" option. The materials are: mortar and pestle sieve and funnel trowel watercolor brush size #3 watercolor canteen watercolor, notebook paper palette palette knife 35T or 6T Titanium White watercolor Please feel free to bring your own dirt to experiment with, but always remember to ask permission before you gather. Each participant will take home the skills necessary to make their own paint from natural pigments. This workshop is part of a full weekend of events at The Assembly celebrating Sara and Rich Combs' new book, "At Home in Joshua Tree: A Field Guide to Desert Living."  Hope to see you in San Francisco in November!
