Alchemy in the Microwave with Mary Mendla

Friday March 16

WI Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts, N50W5050 Portland Rd, Cedarburg

A CEDARBURG SPUR FIBER ARTS TRAIL WEEKEND WORKSHOP Create beautiful, subtle color shifts along with permanent texture on silk in this beginner level workshop. We will use microwaves to heat set dyes and permanently texture silk scarf blanks creating one of a kind “Crinkle Scarves”. Two 14×72” scarves will be completed in this three hour workshop. Multiple techniques of folding, bunching and crinkling will be introduced to create lasting textures in your silk scarves. Layered colors will create subtle, deep shifts in tone which will follow the creases and folds of the texture. “Crinkles” will be permanent in the fabric due to the heat used in setting the dye creating a springy or accordion pleated effect. Have fun and express your love of color, texture, and fiber in this beginning level workshop taught by Mary Mendla at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts. Students will learn basic technical information regarding the chemistry of dyeing silk. Supplies and materials to make two 14×72” silk scarves with three or four layers of Fiber Reactive dye color will be provided. Additional scarf blanks will be available for purchase. Dress for class expecting to get messy and wet! Wear old clothes or bring a water resistant smock to cover your clothes. About the artist: Mary Mendla is a fiber artist, fine art painter, and the owner/designer of two women’s clothing lines, Facets Fashions and Affluere Yoga Wear. Mary earned her BFA from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, with a specialization in Painting and Drawing and a minor in Fiber Arts. She resides in Grafton, Wisconsin and works at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts in Cedarburg, Wisconsin as their Gift Shop Manager. $90.00
